Water activity deserves an explanation, because it's the one that really matters here: it measures the water available in the formula. Without free water there can be no microbial growth — which is why this balm doesn't need the preservative system a conventional cream would contain. The “water-free” on the label isn't a marketing stance: it's measured.
Why this formula isn't just plain beef tallow
It's corrected exactly where pure tallow falls short.
Beef tallow is an excellent occlusive: it forms a film that slows the skin's water loss and provides immediate emollience. But on its own it's almost entirely triglycerides of oleic, palmitic and stearic acids, and it lacks everything else.
This formula adds precisely what it lacks. Squalane, the light lipid that beef tallow doesn't have. Olive, sunflower and soybean oils, which provide the linoleic acid tallow is short on. Beta-sitosterol, a phytosterol that accompanies barrier lipids. Tocopherol, which besides its antioxidant action protects the fats from oxidation in a water-free product. And calendula and honey, the two classics of soothing care.
The result is a rich, nourishing balm designed for dry and very dry skin, damaged areas, hands, elbows and lips. For oily or acne-prone skin, a lighter texture is worth considering.

How to use
1. Take a small amount with your fingertip: it goes much further than you'd think.
2. Warm the balm between your fingers until it melts.
3. Apply a thin layer to clean skin.
4. Focus on the driest areas: hands, elbows, knees, heels and lips.
5. It works even better on slightly damp skin, because it seals in the moisture already there.
6. Use daily, or as an overnight treatment on the most damaged areas.
